Hotspot analysis
Index > research > hotspots

A number of different software packages and algorithms are available to analyse and construct crime hotspots. To review the full range of possibilities would be time consuming and tedious to read, but the approach adopted in this research project is to use a program to generate a fine grid of hotspot intensity. Once this surface has been created a local statistical test is performed, based on a Getis and Ord Gi* statistic. This statistic has been developed to specifically detect hotspots in raster-type surfaces. The output generated both follows the morphology of the crime locations which generated the output, and is statistically supportable.
